Beautify and improve your home with home decor sewing, DIY, and maintenance...because necessity breeds invention.
Hi…my name is Mimzy…legally Melissa but I’ve been called Mimzy from the day I was born. My mom intended for Mimzy to be my legal name but when my sister and brothers found out they protested, so she put Melissa on my birth certificate and they all called me Mimzy anyway. Some people know me as Melissa because I’m sorta shy and don’t always correct people when I’m addressed from some sort of legal document. …you can call me Mimzy.

How to ACTUALLY start sewing in 2023.
I’m so excited for your course!
I have a small club chair that I need to either reupholster or make a slipcover for and I can’t decide which one to do! I have some sewing experience, as well as minor dining room chair upholstery experience. My thoughts are to try the slipcover first and if it looks terrible then try the upholstery. I have been avoiding action on this for several years because I am terrified of messing it up!😳😩
I totally get it! analysis paralysis. I think that's a good idea to try the slipcover first. If you know how to sew then you should be great! Send a pic of your chair on IG @mimzyandco I'd love to see if its a good candidate
Love your channel and all your ideas. Don’t be discouraged or bothered by insignificant comments. I guess that’s why I could never have a YT channel it takes a lot to put yourself out there on the internet where everyone can see you and your ideas you have so much to offer. Iam glad you share your wealth of knowledge. Whatever is in their heart comes out through their comments and sadly attention seekers. If they would be more positive they would not have time to type unnecessary info…… positive vibes
Thank you so much for the encouraging words! You make this youtube journey worth it!
Amazing!!! I love your thought processes.
Thank you Pam!
I'm still trying to figure out where you describe this without the hardware. It looks like you are using hardware but I guess I missed where you described what it is... I absolutely love your style and don't want to watch anyone else anymore
😊 thanks!!! The hardware is for a regular sliding closet door. It really should be ceiling mounted. But it works, and it was practically free.
You are the best and YOU explain/teach perfectly!! ILOVE THIS PASSION VERU MUCH but I didn t make anything, yet !!!.. I saw 2 videos of thus sofà ❤❤.... is there another, ?!?... And I saw also the one "all its necessary for beginners"... but I LIVE In ITALY : so that, woul I buy in AMAZON ITALY ?!?...THE END 😂😂😂😂❤. A KISS FROM ITALY 😊
This was a very helpful tutorial. I like that you used 2 different sides for your pillow - could save a lot of money on changing pillows out. I guess you would need to use same type of fabric? That fabric was gorgeous. Could you tell me what the fabric is, please? Thanks again for your tutorial. I feel like I can do it.
Thank you very much! I’m sorry I don’t have the source for that fabric. I generally buy whatever is on clearance or deep discount.
Great project! We did the same thing with some long hotel dressers. Saves floor space because you don’t need senate dressers.
Great mom!
thank you!
You are amazing and I cant thank you enough. You gave me the knowledge and confidence to even try to slipcover. I started with cheap cotton drop cloth and made my template. I bleached it white, made it soft, pinned it “lots of pinning and believed in my pinning” cut and sewed it together. Wish I could share pictures because It looks amazing and I love it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. All the best, Serena
Wow! I’m so happy to hear this!!! Thank you for telling me! You can DM me some pics on instagram. I’d love to see!
@@MimzyandCompany okay will do
Thank you for your description of how to make/hang the blinds, best application description, I have found. Out tomorrow to purchase what is needed... :-)
Just curious. You had so much fabric in the width of the drapes, why didn't you install the track from wall to wall? It would have covered the black box that was installed when you weren't home😄and added a little drama!
well i considered it, two reasons...I only bought two tracks and used the full length of both tracks. And mostly 2...I don't really like the look of the curtains going wall to wall. It looks like a cheap motel to me. I realize that five star hotels often have wall to wall drapery, but I just don't love it. It's just my personal feeling/preference on the look.
I just did some epoxy countertops I poured the backsplashes first and then install them and then poured the flat part of the countertops to kind of lock them in and seal the cracks to make them waterproof so there's no water would be able to leak through after I got done my client brought to my attention that there was some splatters on the backsplash and since I could not remove them and pull them out and lay them flat I am trying to figure out how to bring back the shine because all the rest of them are high gloss and I want to bring that shine back but after seeing what I just saw on your video about polyurethane I definitely don't want to use that so my question is have you ever considered using clear auto paint ever considered using clear auto paint
No, I never thought to use auto paint. If it was me I'd probably just do another thin layer of epoxy over the whole backsplash. Or over the whole darn thing. Just a really thin layer...maybe use a brush to spread it really thin with the help of a heat gun.

Thank you. I'm gonna try.
This was helpful, thank you.
I’m so glad. I debated on posting this since the instruction is limited. Glad it was helpful.
Did I miss the measuring of fabric etc
Measuring to determine how much fabric you’ll buy? If that’s the question, I have a separate video about that.
You are a serious life saver! We had a party last night and we were dismayed to see some hardcore white water spots when we took off the tablecloth. After trying lots of different techniques (like vinegar + baking soda, etc), we came across your video. It was the only technique that worked and it worked so fast! Thank you!!
well i'm glad this helped...it probably worked fast because you dried it up right after it happened.
If you want to learn upholstery click the link to my "Choose the Right Chair Video" here>>>mailchi.mp/mimzyandcompany.com/choose-the-right-chair
I didn't see the link,or did I miss it.
when you click the video in the description you can click the box below the video and it'll take you to the sales page.
That looks like soapstone! I have soapstone counters and want to seal with epoxy. I want to do the cement epoxy soapstone look in my sisters home remodel. This is awesome! Thank you😊
What do you do if the lamp shade is all broken. Can you do this with just the wire of the shade?
only if the shade has ribs that go between the top and bottom hoops. know what i mean? a lot of shades don't have these.
Your attention to detail is awesome. Great job.
Thanks Will! Although this project is far from perfect! I really just got it done, with very little regard to detail since it's outside. thanks for commenting.
Wow! Is there anything you CAN’T make??
ha! I'm not afraid to try...I've had many failed projects.
Love your videos and plan to sew a slipcover for my sofa after getting an reupholstery quote (Wow!). What type needle and thread did you use?
i usually use upholstery weight thread and a 90/14 or denim needle.
Hi, do you think this track could be bent to accommodate a 2/3 bay window? Thanks and thanks for the great tips in this video :-)
Hmmm. I don’t think so, I feel like it would cave in on the bend and the carriers would not longer slide through. But it could worth a try.
I’m so glad I came across this video. Our field is failing because of clay pipes, and we have the sludge water in one point of the yard. What a pain! RIP to my back when I get shoveling
just take your time...plan for it to take a couple weeks and dig for a couple hours and then rest. And if you can get some help for a bit it really makes a difference. once you get down to the pipe it's smooth sailing. Hows it going since it's been 5 days?
This was the easiest tutorial to follow! New to pillow making & was looking for a more simple & straight to the point instructions. Thank you for sharing
Ok, thank you. I feel like I need to make a new video since this one is so old and I didn’t know how edit at the time.
Mine finally really yellowed after 3 years . Trying to refinish it now
I really need to do mine. I still think it’s really worth it!
I am so inspired! Do you have a specific fabric to recommend? What are you suing here?
Thank you! The fabric I used for these sofas is a performance fabric by revolution fabrics. It’s a great fabric for upholstery but not the greatest for a slipcover. It spot cleans really well , but doesn’t wash super well in the washing machine. For slipcovers I’d use their slipcover twill by revolution.
The chop "waves" echoe the 3-dimensionality of the headboard behind it too, with the horizontal lines of the regular pillows continuing the bedstand lines. Nice balance!
Huh…you’re right! Good eye.
Fantastic outcome Mimzy! Was curious how you ended up treating the temporary "piano back peeking out" dilemma a couple months back?
Oh yeah! It took me a minute to remember what you’re talking about.😃. I moved the piano to my guest bedroom….temporarily until my son has a more permanent living situation and he can take it to his house.
you dont need to use springs for the seat? is only foam enough?
Foam is enough.😉
Hi. I watched your video and agree that it's the best one. So, I made my first shade today for a small lamp. The only thing I didn't like was the finish at the top. I put the band around the top no problem. But I could see where I cut the fabric at the top of the shade. I would like a more finished look. Is there an additional step that could be added to cover that? I would like to make more, but I need a solution for this. Thanks. Greetings from the great state of Georgia!
Thank you. I think you could make the binding a little bigger and then open it up to enclose the top.
Where can you get "un barn door" hardware like that?
Home Depot
if we don't want the smile at the bottom and just want it flat-- how do we achieve that? And you never showed how to sew in the hooks and thread the string thru it -- what kind of string. Great video loved the draper panel one too.
Excellent instructions.
thank you!
Why don’t you have the link to the product you used? Why did you install the 🇸🇪 ikea product and not the Amazon one? 🧄🧅 I’m installing the products where they should be. Thanks for the carrier information. ❄️☃️
you cant link IKEA on youtube. so i linked to the closest item i could find.
Our dogs love the hole down the middle, it’s like a den!
I bet they do!!!😆
I love it
lol
Measurements always confuse me
I know, same here. Just start with guesstimates and doing the best you can, and over time you’ll get better with measurements. It takes time and experience.
Wow!!! You are incredible, you did an awesome job, congratulations!!
thanks!🤗
I’ve made dog ear pillows and trust me they were NOT cheap. It was a trend that’s all.
I guess so. Although I still see them a lot.
Truly, this is one of the most informative tutorials I've seen. I'm an intermediate beginner & had learned that the diagonal stretchy was the bias & the grain was the less stretch & defined by the selvage. Your thread method is much more precise to determine the grain. Thank you!
Yes…and it allows to exchange out covers
Hello Mimzy, link is not valid or has expired. Could you please provide a new link? Thank you very much in advance!!
I wish I could provide a new link, but it’s expired and just gone. I’ve searched and searched for these plans or something similar and can’t find anything. I guess I need to make my own.
Thank you you make it look so easy
Best tutorial I have ever seen for this! Thank you!!!! May I ask, what if my lampshade is tapered slightly (smaller diameter at top than bottom)?
Thank you!!! you just have spread the fabric strips farther at the bottom and closer at the top.
